What to Know About Biodiesel Fuel

Biodiesel Fuel 101

Biodiesel fuel is a product that must meet strict specifications to function properly. The blend of compounds in biodiesel is completely renewable, biodegradable, and 100% natural because of the makeup of its ingredients – namely methyl esters – which Cremer provides daily from globally sourced materials.

Performance-wise, biodiesel increases overall lubricity, a factor which helps extend the life of many moving parts in an engine. The fuel also burns cleaner, reducing the amount of soot and airborne particles generated from tailpipe emissions. As a result, biodiesel emits less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

How Biodiesel is Produced

The fuel is produced through a special process called transesterification.

In this method, glycerin and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) are separated from natural sources like vegetable oils, animal fats, and even unused cooking oils and algae. The residual esters make up the fuel, which is then used in automobiles, aircraft, and as heat for cooking or warming your home.

Biodiesel is renewable, which in this case specifically refers to its sources. Production is cyclical, in a way, because the ingredients for the fuel are extracted from natural sources like plant oils and animal fats.

What is Biodiesel Used For?

Once the fuel is produced, biodiesel can be used in several ways, with many important environmental benefits.

Most commonly, it is used as an alternative fuel for diesel vehicles, including aircraft. In this capacity, the fuel can substitute for regular petroleum-based diesel fuel. Because biodiesel is naturally sourced, it burns more thoroughly, is sustainable, and helps to improve the air quality in our communities.
