FATTY ACIDS FROM CREMER: ORIGINS AND TYPES

CREMER North America works with several classifications of fatty acids produced from natural triglyceride sources including:

  • Palm kernel oils
  • Coconut-based oils
  • Soybean-based oils
  • Tallow-based oils

The processing of these natural and biodegradable oils result in several products carried by CREMER North America in varying levels of distillation and purity:

  • Short-chain, medium-chain, and long-chain fatty acids
  • Stearic acid
  • Oleic acid
  • Palmitic acid

The short-, medium- and long-chain fatty acids are defined by the number of carbons within their aliphatic tails.

Short-chain fatty acids have 8 or fewer carbons, 10 to 14 carbons comprise medium-chain fatty acids, and long-chain fatty acids contain 16 and higher carbons.

Distilled fatty acids are produced through a distillation process that raises the product to a boiling point to remove impurities.

Stearic acid

Stearic acid is a long-chain fatty acid (18 carbon atoms) found in many vegetable and animal fats. Manufacturers include stearic acid in a wide variety of products from soap and lotions to baked goods and even as industrial lubricants, stabilizers and release agents. Often taking the form of a soft, waxy solid, stearic acid is a prime candidate for pastillation for easy transfer and mixing.

Oleic acid

Oleic acid is a naturally occurring acid found in vegetables and animals. In its purest form, oleic acid is odorless and colorless, although impurities may contribute color to less refined formulations. Oleic acid is found naturally in many foods, and may be added to processed food and beverage as an alternative to saturated fats. In personal care and industrial uses, manufacturers take advantage of the emulsifying and emollient properties of oleic acid in soap, aerosol sprays, as a solubilizing agent to promote sustained mixing in formulations, and as a non-active mixing agent in pharmaceuticals.

Palmitic acid

Palmitic acid is a 16-carbon saturated fatty acid. While commonly found in palm oil, palmitic acid is also found in animal and vegetable fats including tallow, soybean oil, and cocoa butter. Palmitic acid is often used to improve mouthfeel in processed food items including those certified organic when derived from palm trees grown organically. It is often used in personal care soaps and cosmetics as an emollient and lubricant. In industrial formulations, palmitic acid is a valuable release agent and lubricant due to its low volatility in high-heat environments.
